After a conflict of conflicting emotions among Americans and high gas prices at home, President Donald Trump has announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran.
In the President’s most recent statement to social media, he confirmed that the US will suspend the bombing of Iran for a period of two weeks. The POTUS stated the reasoning for the ceasefire, to negotiate a “definitive agreement concerning long-term peace with Iran.” Iran sent a ten-point peace proposal to the US, which the President called, “A workable basis on which to negotiate.” Peace in the conflict has a chance to prevail with the announcement of the ceasefire.
Ceasing the attacks also includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran had blocked the strait and made it unsafe for American and Israeli ships to cross.. The body of water itself happens to be one of the most crucial channels for the transport of oil. This hopefully means oil prices can soar down from the high prices that have been experienced.
However, the talks of ceasefire have been somewhat back and forth. Previously, Donald Trump had made many statements threatening to increase the attacks on Iran, stating dramatically in a recent social media post, “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen but it probably will.” Even earlier in the conflict, Trump called for the sinking of the entire Iranian navy in a post announcing the sinking of nine ships. He stated, “We are going after the rest – They will soon be floating at the bottom of the sea.”
While the two-week ceasefire agreement is positive news for peace in the conflict, some may take it with a grain of salt. The President’s previous statements contradict the peace agreement he claims to be reaching for. Regardless, the US attacks on Iran will be halted for two weeks.
