Zoie Fatal, a sophomore at Green Hope, has a lot on her plate, but stays dedicated throughout the chaos. Between difficult courses and excellent performance on Green Hope’s volleyball team, her hands are full, but she continues to give back to the school with her achievements.
Fatal got ahead from the start, working hard from a young age to be ahead in her math classes, and was a part of the advanced program at her middle school. However, she did not stop there, continuing to push herself to the limit freshman year by taking two math classes, including AP Precalculus. This allowed her to take both AP Calculus classes her sophomore year, further proving how persistent she is and her skill in mathematics.
Mathematics isn’t where Fatal stops though. She has participated in numerous other AP classes and explores health and science as well. As a member of Key Club and Falcon Medicine, she puts her mind to use in a way that protects the health and wellbeing of many other people. In Key Club, Fatal learned about public service and honoring her school. The hands-on medical experience and skills she learned in Falcon Medicine also allowed Zoie to be prepared for the future she desires. She hopes to continue this pathway, graduating with as many college credits as possible, then entering in a medical program as soon as she is able to. This will allow her to become a doctor, where she can utilize the skills she has honed to aid others.
Being in a stressful environment, surrounded primarily by students older than her in her classes, Fatal struggled with stress and feeling unmotivated. However, her involvement on the volleyball team brought her joy and courage. “When I get to play with the girls on my team, I completely forget about the stress of studying and classes, and I just get to enjoy the game,” shared Zoie.
This wasn’t always the case though, as she endured multiple instances of trying out for club volleyball teams, playing as hard as she could, yet still feeling like she wasn’t enough, and not making it onto the teams. According to Zoie, “It was heartbreaking not to make the team, but it showed me how much more I could work, which allowed me to finally make it onto the team at Green Hope.”
Fatal continues to work at her volleyball career, and has participated in many leagues throughout the city. She has even earned multiple gold and silver medals for her accomplishments in recent years, even though she often competes against teams with older players. According to Fatal, engaging in these programs will give her the ability to one day carry the Green Hope team to an overall district win, which is one of her many aspirations for high school.
“Most of the time, I just feel like I don’t have enough time to get everything done and reach every goal,” explained Fatal. However, throughout her struggle to juggle each aspect of her life, Zoie finds the motivation and manages herself in a way that allows her to keep her eyes on the prize. Whatever the sacrifice or pain, Zoie will always work to bring honor to herself and the school she represents.
