State primary election results released

And the results are in — North Carolina’s primary election resulted in wins for former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden, in addition to candidates for a variety of other positions.

From Feb. 15 through March 2, early voting for North Carolina’s statewide primary began. Citizens were able to vote in a party’s presidential primary and several other state-wide elections. Former President Trump secured the state’s Republican Party nominee for the Presidency, winning about 75% of the votes. President Joe Biden secured the Democratic nominee for Presidency, winning 87% of the votes. 

Attorney General Josh Stein secured the Democratic Nominee for Governor where he secured approximately 70% of the vote. Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson, who received about 65% of the vote, secured the Republican nominee for Governor. 

Rachel Hunt, who previously served two terms in the North Carolina House of Representatives and is currently serving in the North Carolina Senate, secured the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor with 70% of the vote. Hal Weatherman, who previously served as the Chief of Staff for both former Lieutenant Governor, Dan Forest and former U.S Representative Sue Myrick, successfully secured spots in the Republican Lieutenant Governor nominee runoff election, which will be held on May 14, 2024. 

Current U.S. Representative of North Carolina’s District 14 Jeff Jackson secured approximately 55% of the vote, securing the Democratic party nominee for Attorney General.  Dan Bishop was the U.S. Representative of North Carolina’s eighth district since 2019 and ran uncontested as the Republican Attorney General nominee. Dr. Sarah Taber also ran uncontested for the Democratic nominee for the Commissioner of Agriculture. Current commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler, who has been in office since 2005, won the Republican Nominee with approximately 69% of the votes.

Judge Carolyn Thompson ran uncontested for Democratic nominee for the Appeals Court, and she will face uncontested Republican nominee Tom Murry for the 12th seat of the Court of Appeals. Edward Eldred ran uncontested for the Democratic nominee for the Appeals Court, and he will be running against current Republican nominee Judge Valerie Zachary for the fourteenth seat of the Court of Appeals. Martin Moore ran uncontested for the Democratic Nominee for the fifteenth seat of the court of appeals and he will face Chris Freeman, who won about 63% of the votes in the Republican nominee. 

Current North Carolina Auditor Jessica Holmes secured the Democratic party nominee for the position, and she will face either Dave Boilek or Jack Clark as the eventual Republican nominee. The state auditor is in charge of reviewing the finances of local governments and state agencies to ensure that the tax dollars are being used for their intended purpose. 

Natasha Marcus secured the Democratic Party nominee for Insurance Commissioner, with roughly 80% of the votes. Current Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey secured the Republican nominee for this spot, receiving around 60% of the votes. Braxton Winston won unopposed for the Democratic nominee for Commissioner of Labor. Luke Farley secured the Republican nominee for Commissioner of Labor with 37% of the votes. 

Current Secretary of State Elaine Marshall ran uncontested as the Democratic Nominee for Secretary of State. Chad Brown ran for the Republican nominee for the secretary of state, where he received 43% of the votes. Maurice Green secured the Democratic nominee for Superintendent of Education. Michele Morrow received the Republican nomination for Superintendent of Education, beating incumbent Catherine Truitt by 4% more votes. 

Current Supreme Court Associate Justice Allison Riggs secured the democratic nominee, receiving approximately 70% of the votes. Judge Jefferson Griffin ran unopposed in the Republican primary. Wesley Harris secured the Democratic nominee for North Carolina Treasurer, receiving 67% of the votes. Brad Briner secured the Republican nominee for the position, receiving 40% of the votes. 

All 120 seats in the North Carolina House were open for reelection, as well as all 50 in the Senate. 14 additional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives were also open to reelection. Further information about these results can be found here.

Leo McDunn, Staff Writer
Leo McDunn is a junior at Green Hope High School and was born in Saint Louis Missouri. Leo is in Boy Scout of America Troup 209, he is working on his eagle, a rank in the organization.  He currently lives in Cary, NC with his two siblings and parents. In his free time, he enjoys playing ultimate frisbee and is on Green Hope High School Ultimate Frisbee team. His favorite cuisine is Indian food and the dish that piqued his interest is Chicken Tikka Masala. Leo also likes to spend time on Instagram but also likes to watch movies, one of which is The Princess Bride. In the future, Leo wishes to major in political science and become either a campaign manager or a political figure.
