For the past few months, dump trucks moving thousands of pounds of dirt have impeded students’ walk from the main building to the modules in the rear of the school. Which, as most have come to realize, is a symptom of undergoing an extreme renovation to Green Hope’s baseball facility.

The main goal of this project, as stated by Construction Bid Source.com, is to install a new baseball field underdrain and irrigation system onto the existing field while also flattening the playing surface. But, other surrounding implementations shouldn’t be overlooked. These include a new access road, upgrading the current fencing, and erosion control. All of this is to be done by numerous contractors hired by Wake County. The Wooten Company designed the field for Wake County Public School System and C. Blake Lewis Co. is the contractor working on the field currently.
The GH Falcon spoke with Green Hope’s head baseball coach, Justin Reitz, about the project. Coach Reitz stated, “This was something that the county had talked about doing for years, prior to me coming to Green Hope. There was a significant drop off from the infield to the outfield and every time it rained we would have sitting water in the outfield. Fixing the drainage and leveling out the field will help with player safety and improve the look of our baseball field.” He made sure to mention that the project will be completed by August 1, but with projects of this magnitude, it wouldn’t surprise him to have an extended deadline.
The project was first approved prior to 2020 but then was canceled due to the effects of the coronavirus outbreak. It was again approved and canceled a few years ago. They finally decided in the 2024-2025 school year to move ahead and started the project last fall.

The most surprising fact about this upgrade is its financial burden placed on Green Hope and Wake County. The estimated price is around $2,000,000 to complete these tasks. Many students and staff question whether these funds were used to best aid the majority of the students at Green Hope. Although, they are correct to question whether these funds could have been used to impact a larger number of students’ education, they are misguided in their understanding of where this money is coming from. The Wake County Education Budget is over $2,100,000,000 for the 2026 school year. But this field’s payment wasn’t pulled from this sum. The baseball field renovation at Green Hope High School is being paid for primarily through “private funding” rather than the school’s normal operating budget. Although the Wake County Public School System is overseeing and managing the project, the money is coming from external sources such as community donations, booster support and possibly sponsorships tied to athletics. This means that taxpayer funds usually used for classrooms and academic needs are not the main source for the project. Instead, the renovation is being financed through contributions specifically placed toward improving athletics facilities. This allows the school to upgrade its baseball field without relying heavily on public education funding.
What feels like a daily inconvenience for students is actually part of an overdue improvement at Green Hope High School. The construction may make it harder to get to class or lunch quickly but it is fixing real problems with the baseball field. Green Hope High School has prioritized safety issues caused by poor drainage and uneven ground. It’s also important to understand that even though the project costs a lot, it isn’t taking money away from students in classrooms. While students may be frustrated through the rest of the school year, the end result will be a better, safer field that benefits Green Hope Athletics for many years to come.
