Whether you’re passing through Mod 1 or taking a language class there, you’ve probably used or seen the bathrooms there. But recently, the quality of the men’s bathroom has been getting worse week by week. Mod 1 is home to the language classes, and students move through it all day, every week. Although all the mods were built at the same time, Mod 1 is in the roughest condition.
Back in 2013, the old football practice field was in the current place of the mods. It was torn down, and four modular buildings were put in its place. Now, 13 years later, Mod 1 is by far in the worst condition. Some examples of the damage include holes and leaks in the ceilings, faulty faucets, out-of-order toilets, missing mirrors, graffiti on the stalls, faulty water fountains and more.
But why has the Mod 1 bathroom taken the biggest hit? Back in September of 2021, a trend was going around schools nationwide called “Devious Licks.” This trend involved students vandalizing and destroying school property such as bathrooms by taking soap dispensers, damaging mirrors, clogging toilets and much more. This trend could have contributed to the quality of the bathrooms today. Many of the outcomes of this trend match the condition of the bathrooms now.
Devious Licks could be contributing to the condition of the bathrooms, so the GH Falcon spoke with some Green Hope Students for their opinions on the bathrooms in Mod 1. Sam Weinraub (‘28), a baseball player and language enthusiast, stated that the bathrooms were “run down” and said that the damaged condition is “a little disrespectful to the language classes here at Mod 1.” He also commented on the faulty water fountains, saying that he “can’t even get water.” Finally, when asked about a possible cause for the current condition, Weinraub said, “It could have been kids messing around, or even the school messing around.” He also said that the school “needs to take initiative” towards the bathrooms in Mod 1.
Also, many teachers around the country commented on Devious Licks and how they are affecting their schools and students. Educators from across the country said that they are “burnt out” and “overwhelmed” from this trend.
Overall, the Mod 1 bathrooms are more than just an eyesore; they’re a daily problem for the students and teachers who use them. Years of wear, followed by destructive trends, have left the bathroom in a state that feels disrespectful to the language classes and their students. Students like Weinraub and teachers from around the country have made it clear that this kind of damage takes a real toll. It’s time for the school to take initiative, repair the facilities, and make sure that Mod 1 reflects the respect and dedication that the students put into this school, and ultimately, give Green Hope the care that it deserves.
