Panchi-kun, or Punch for short, the most famous Japanese monkey ever, has captured the hearts of millions across the world. Punch is a baby macaque at the Ichiwaka City Zoo in Japan who has gone viral for his heartfelt bond with his stuffed orangutan.
Punch made his viral debut on social media platforms such as TikTok, X and Instagram when other members of his tribe tragically rejected his affection, pushing and shoving him away. Punch has also been repeatedly filmed being dragged, attacked and picked on by older crowds of Macaques. Without the comfort of his mother, Punch turned to the stuffed orangutan that IKEA had donated to him as a calming source. Some of the most viral videos have featured the baby monkey dashing away from the older monkeys, hiding or sleeping under his orangutan. Zookeepers often use these plushies as the soft texture mimics that of a mother’s fur, which is crucial for a baby macaque’s sensory development.
Since this incident, the internet has created a massive surge in demand for the orangutan toy, causing it to sell out across IKEA in Japan, the United States and South Korea. Additionally, social media users, particularly on TikTok and X, have reacted with intense, “protective energy.” Those who are unfamiliar with primate behavior labeled the older Macaques as “bullies”, calling to shut down the zoo. The zoo issued a formal statement, addressing the “bullying”, stating that it is normal, rough behavior from macaques. The older macaques were not simply “beating” him, but rather asserting dominance to prove the social hierarchy, as Punch is simply a newcomer.
After being hand-raised by zookeepers, Punch was moved to the main macaque enclosure in the Ichiwaka Zoo. The baby monkey has recently been seen being groomed and cherished by other, older macaques. Reports of an adult, male macaque have begun stepping in to shield punch. This protection has helped Punch adapt to the community and assert a position in the hierarchy alongside the other macaques. Despite being accepted, Punch has continued to validate his orangutan plushie, carrying it alongside him throughout the enclosure. Other videos of Punch walking on his two front legs mimicking people, as well as climbing onto the shoulders of zookeepers during feeding time, have surfaced with millions of likes.
The trend of baby animals taking the internet by storm has once again continued with Punch. Recent animal celebrities have included Moo Deng, the baby hippo and Pesto the penguin, both raising awareness of the fascinating behaviors of different species.
As of late, Punch has shown remarkable resilience, finally adapting to the habitat and other macaques around him while also becoming an internet star. For now, the world can only watch Punch grow, remembering him as the “lonely baby monkey” who finally found his place.
