Ready. Six of the top girls’ 500m runners from across North Carolina get to their lanes. Set. The athletes brace for the gunshot that will signify the start of the most important race of their season. Go! The 500m indoor track state finalists sprint for the finish, but there could only be one winner: Green Hope High School’s Ellie Beck (‘27).
Winning a state championship is a feat that most high school athletes strive for, but few will ever achieve. Thursday, Feb. 19, junior Ellie Beck brought home a state title for the Falcons Indoor Track team in the girls’ 500m race, pulling off the win with a time of 1 minute and 14.11 seconds. During indoor season, Beck runs the 500m, 300m, 4x400m and 4x200m races, while during outdoor season in spring, she runs the 400m, 4x200m and 4x400m.
In order to end a season on such a high note, work has to be done leading up to the championship meet and especially during the offseason. Beck spoke on her hard work, saying, “My in-season training is every day after school at practice. In my offseason, I go on runs or do a workout at the track while strength training in the gym.” She also reflected on her mindset during the 2025-26 indoor track season, describing her focus and hard work every day at practice and how that mindset led her to push for a personal best at each meet.
Any elite athlete knows that sports take no small amount of mental strength, especially in a sport that can feel so individualized during a race. Beck described her usual mentality during her races: “During a race, I seek out the girl in front of me and focus on passing her until I’m in front, then I focus on finishing the race, giving it everything I have left.” Given that this was no ordinary 500m, Beck shared that “this race felt different from other races because there was a lot more on the line than a regular meet.”
As success can’t be achieved alone, she attributes her state title and incredible indoor season to her teammates and coaches, and thanked them for their constant support and encouragement to get her to this point. “My teammates and I support each other through practices and meets, making each other better. I couldn’t do this without them.”
Furthermore, Beck mentioned that she wouldn’t even be involved in track had it not been for her parents. She shared that in middle school, her mom recommended that she run track to improve her soccer skills, eventually swapping out soccer for track as her main athletic focus. Beck noted her parents as her biggest supporters for years, and said, “My parents also have always been there for me, going out of their way to be at every meet, cheering me on, believing in me even if I didn’t believe in myself. This helped me build my confidence knowing I would always have someone who would be there for me.”
With high school outdoor track now in full swing, the spring season is sure to be a good one for Beck and the Falcons. She hopes that her work on the track and off will translate to personal bests and, if possible, more state titles for the outdoor season. Beck wishes to continue running for as long as she can, which, for her, in an ideal world, means being a member of a collegiate track team that has her finding a home close to the beach.
As Green Hope Athletics continues to produce champions, it’s important to remember that no athlete can win titles without an incredible support system and hard work, both of which propelled Beck to her first-place finish.
