This year in the NFL has been one exciting season to say the least. There were multiple upsets leading up to this Super Bowl. The Chiefs were eliminated from playoff contention after a 16-13 loss against the Los Angeles Chargers, also while having superstar Patrick Maholmes suffer a season-ending torn ACL. The Panthers suffered a similar fate after a 34-31 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Then in the playoffs, the Bills lost a heartbreaker in overtime, 33-30, to the Denver Broncos, but the Broncos didn’t get away without a scratch. Second-season starter Bo Nix suffered a broken right ankle during the last play of overtime against the Bills, foreshadowing their fate against the New England Patriots the very next game, losing at home 10-7.
This takes us to Super Bowl LX (60), leading the Patriots to contend against the red-hot Seahawks for the second time. But what is different about both teams from the last time they faced off in the Super Bowl?
PATRIOTS: In 2015, the Patriots had a respected and experienced roster, filled with stars like quarterback(QB) Tom Brady, tight end Rob Gronkowski, linebacker Jamie Collins, running back LeGarrette Blount and many other contributing players. Brady had won three Super Bowls coming into Super Bowl XLIX, all while having Bill Belichick commanding the team, who had won four previous Super Bowls. The 2025-26 season for the Patriots has been a turning point for the organization. After coming off a disappointing 4-13 2024-25 season, the Patriots decided it was time to change their strategy. They fired head coach Jerod Mayo and brought in Mike Vrabel to lead the team to better standings the next year. The Patriots also traded QB Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars, while releasing second-string QB Bailey Zappe. These changes left big holes to fill for Mike Vrabel and he filled them up with talent. Drake Maye was brought into the starting spot for QB, while the Patriots shifted their look to their offensive squad, spending over $120 Million plus in improvements. Vrabel also brought a different, more competitive culture to the team, pushing players to their potential. Overall, the ‘25 squad is very different from the ‘15 squad the Patriots were running, from their young roster to the new staff.
SEAHAWKS: In 2015, the Seahawks were running a powerful roster, which included QB Russell Wilson, Running Back Marshawn Lynch, Wide Receiver Chris Matthews and many more contributing players. This squad was run by head coach Pete Carroll. After a slow 2-4 start to the 2014-15 season, while relying on their consistent defence, the Seahawks shifted to an offensive approach, focusing on protecting their QB Russell Wilson. The team heavily relied on a faster passing game, which ironically ended their season in heartbreak. Now, the Seahawks have drastically changed their team and staff, similar to the Patriots. After the 2024 season, Head Coach Pete Carroll was fired and replaced by Mike Macdonald, who completely changed the organization. The team shifted its focus to rookies and younger talent, replacing veterans like DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. The Seahawks added QB Sam Darnold and gave him a strong offense, adding Linebacker Ernest Jones IV, Edge Rusher DeMarcus Lawrence and Receiver Cooper Kupp. Additionally, second-year star Jaxon Smith-Njigba became the centerpiece, breaking the single-season receiving yards record this season. Like the Patriots, the Seahawks shifted their focus to younger talent and made key changes to their staff.
But what does this mean to fans of both teams? Owner of the Patriots, Robert Kraft, says, “I know I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but after my family, this team is the most important thing in my life. The bottom line is winning games … I really think we’re on that path now.” Both teams are very confident for this matchup, but it’s more than winning for the Seahawks. It’s about redemption. After 2015, the Seahawks were left in shock after the Super Bowl was taken right from them by the Patriots. Now with a chance to redeem themselves and their city, how will they respond to the rising pressure? We will all find out this weekend.
