On Friday, April 17, Green Hope Softball held its annual senior night to celebrate the accomplishments and memories of three senior players, Rachael Baldyga, Sophia Cerneka and Daiyana Provencio. The varsity team is currently ranked 5th in the 8A conference, and held this year’s celebration at home against the Jordan Falcons. The GH Falcon recently sat down with player Rachael Baldyga and Coach Rich Baldyga to inquire about this year’s senior night and the sentimental meaning behind it.

Rachael Baldyga began her softball journey at eight years old and has played Green Hope softball for all four years of her high school career. She was officially given the captain title her junior year and currently holds numerous school records, emphasizing her place as a role model for other athletes on the team. Similarly, Baldyga’s impact on others has been as strong as the impact the team has had on her, sharing, “Being a part of Green Hope softball has really allowed me to step into a leadership role from being a captain to a role model both on and off the field. It really allowed me to develop as a person, not just as a player.”
Four seasons on the team has helped Baldyga form numerous memories, both as an athlete and a friend, that she can keep for life and use to influence her future softball experiences. “[My favorite memory was] getting to watch our growth as a team along with getting to watch the people grow,” she shared. Additionally, she has enjoyed fulfilling a leadership role for the majority of her time on the team, allowing her to interact with and positively impact the experiences of her teammates. “Starting out as an underclassmen on varsity and having several upperclassmen as my role models has really allowed me to be able to be a role model now for the younger girls,” she explained. Teammates frequently describe her as driven and supportive, showcasing the leadership skills that back up her captain’s position.
Baldyga is committed to play for Christopher Newport University in the fall, a Division III school that will allow her to further her softball career and positively impact a new group of athletes. Her advice to younger athletes is to play sports and stay involved, making the most of their high school athletic experiences. “In my opinion, getting to be surrounded by such amazing athletes is such a great opportunity,” shared Baldyga.
Additionally, Coach Rich Baldyga began coaching Green Hope Softball this year and was a key figure in senior night. Despite this season being his first as a Falcon coach, he has made various connections and learned a significant amount from this year’s athletes. “I am impacted every day coaching these seniors and watching them lead the younger players and be strong role models,” he shared. “I so much appreciate the game more from being on the inside, watching them work hard every day and fight in every game.”

The many games and practices this season have also allowed Coach Baldyga to create many memories with the team, watching athletes break both personal and school records, such as watching Cerneka join a group of four athletes that passed 50 career hits. “We had a little post-game celebration and she was not aware of her accomplishment prior,” he shared.
Specifically, he enjoyed watching captain Rachael Baldyga, who he explained broke various records within the season. “It seemed like every game for Rachael to hit a milestone or set an all time Green Hope career record. We first celebrated her 100th career hit. She is now the all time Green Hope career leader in hits, runs, runs batted in, home runs and doubles.” Additionally, Baldyga also earned the title for batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage. “She is also quietly (did not pitch much in early seasons) approaching 200 strikeouts as a pitcher.”
Coach Baldyga’s experience as a coach this season has allowed him to witness what makes an athlete and team successful. His advice for graduating seniors is that softball is more than wins and losses. “Take everything you learned playing with you in life because the skills developed on the field will help you whether you continue playing, learning in college or to facilitate your career and jobs,” he shared. “Skills like teamwork, leadership, competing and concentration can apply to all life encounters.”
The annual tradition of senior night is one that is highly anticipated by all varsity sports teams at Green Hope. Green Hope is proud of its senior athletes and looks forward to seeing what’s to come.
