To his AP Government students, he is a savant of history; to the literature community, he is an established author; and to his thousands of past and present athletes at Green Hope High School, Michael Miragliuolo is simply “Coach.” With over 370 wins in his career as a baseball coach and multiple state championships as a cross country coach, the 2024 Green Hope Hall of Fame inductee has cemented himself as the head of one of the most successful athletic eras in North Carolina history.
Michael Miragliuolo was born in Kingstree, South Carolina, in 1974, but he moved to Bangor, Maine, where he graduated from John Bapst Memorial High School. Miragliuolo was a top-tier multi-sport athlete in high school, playing varsity baseball, basketball, golf and running cross country. Miraglioulo later earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in history from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. After graduation, Miragliuolo taught at John Bapst Memorial for five years, coaching the basketball, baseball and soccer teams. Following his short but accomplished tenure at John Bapst, “Coach M.” began his career at Green Hope in 2001.
Mirgaliuolo, or “Coach M,” came from a coaching environment: “my father was a coach for over 30 years… I grew up around the coaching atmosphere.” In 2001, Coach M was hired to be the baseball coach at Green Hope, where he went on to have tremendous success, compiling a 371-161 career record. However, at the time of the hiring, Coach M was also persuaded into coaching the cross country team, “having a history of running cross country in high school and my dad coaching, the athletic director thought I could do it… I finally agreed, and once I noticed the team growing in size and success, I knew it was the right decision.”
Under Miragliuolo, the cross-country team has built a tradition of excellence, with a long list of accomplishments. The men’s cross country team has won 15 conference championships, along with 8 4A Mideast regional championships. The women’s team also has a rich history of 15 conference championships and 10 Mideast regional titles. Beyond the regional championship level, the women’s cross country team etched its name in history, winning its first North Carolina state title in 2009. This engravement proved not to be a fluke as the women followed it up with state titles in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. With the men also finding success in 2010, Coach Miragliuolo spoke on the year itself, “of all the years, 2010 will always stand out… it was our second girls state title and our first boys title… going into the state meet, everybody knew the girls would win, while the boys were in a seven-team mix and managed to came out on top”. Continuing the legacy, the women were state runner-ups in 2015, 2016 and 2017 while the men won state titles in 2017 and 2022. An advocate for hard work, with the men and women combining for nine state titles, Coach M spoke on the commonalities of these teams, “each of these teams embraced hard work, but success also came with good fortune and not having injuries… it is interesting to look back at the women’s six state-title runner-ups and think ‘what-if’”.
Coach M is often recognized as “coach”, but he has also been a long-tenured AP United States Government teacher here at Green Hope as well as an established author with three books: An American Boy (2011), The Real Story of a High School Coach (2014) and Ischia: La Mia Seconda Casa (2023).
Thousands of athletes have been coached under Miragliuolo, with over 60 runners competing at the collegiate level. Assistant cross country/track & field coach Bryan Spreitzer happened to be one of those athletes. Spreitzer’s connection to Coach Miragliuolo is a testament to the long-standing, connected culture of the program. Spreitzer was a standout runner who graduated as part of the class of 2010. Spreitzer has a long list of accomplishments, including 3 all-conference selections, 2 all-region selections, 2009 team MVP, 2009 conference MVP and state runner-up. Spreitzer has the fourth fastest 5000m at Green Hope with a time of 15:27 and the third fastest indoor 3200m time of 9:30. Spreitzer went on to run 3 years at North Carolina State University, eventually making his return to the Falcons in 2023.
While sitting down with Coach Spreitzer, he emphasized how much the Green Hope running program means to him, “This program means the world to me; it’s where I first discovered my passion for distance running… Coming back to coach years later is a blessing because I see that same fire in my athletes”. Spreitzer’s long list of accomplishments is a product of discipline, dedication and grit. As a coach, Spreitzer has contributed to immense success for many athletes on the course and the track; however, he strives to teach his runners a deeper lesson, “If there is one thing I want every athlete at green hope to learn, its this: In this life, hard work is usually the answer to the problem you are trying to solve”. Before his coaching career, Spreitzer ran under Coach Miragliuolo, who has had a major influence on his very own coaching style. Spreitzer distinctly remembers his first Green Hope cross-country practice, “Coach M was and still is incredibly passionate about athletes getting the most out of themselves… I’ll never forget him telling us ‘Champions of the fall are made in the summer.’ In a world that wants everything instantly, Coach M taught us that building something takes time, grit and a no-nonsense commitment… I carry that same belief into my coaching today”.
As of 2026, the Green Hope running legacy remains strong as ever, continuing to grow under Coach Miraglioulo and his dedicated staff. With each new season comes a new group of athletes eager to contribute to a program that is built on discipline, resilience, and a commitment to excellence. In a sport defined by uncertainty and non-stop effort, one question continues to drive Green Hope athletes forward: “What if you fly?”
