With coach Kaylee Jacobs’ departure from the school, Green Hope’s softball team has started a new chapter under Mr. Richard Baldyga. The well-liked coach and teacher at Green Hope, Ms. Jacobs, had to move midyear, which would have left the Falcon softball team without direction. Fortunately, a parent with coaching experience stepped up and took over the softball program.
Who is Ms. Jacobs?
Jacobs was not only a coach, but an English 1 and 2 teacher and advisor for the women in politics club. Even though she was only here for a year and a half, Jacobs was a well-respected and well-liked teacher and coach at Green Hope, and she will be missed by many. She always encouraged her students and did her best to build a supportive environment. “She was super welcoming to me when I first came to Green Hope,” says Justin Herrick (‘28), a former student of hers, “She was the most helpful person to me in all regards.”
She impacted her students, and especially her players, profoundly. “She changed my view on softball,” says Ava Umbra (‘28), a player for the Green Hope softball team. “She was a nice person, and she really cared for her players.” About Jacobs’ coaching, player Rachael Baldyga (‘26) says, “I got the opportunity to step up and be more of a leader than I’ve ever been.” Despite her short time here at Green Hope, she definitely had a powerful effect on many, and her influence on people’s lives will continue in whatever she pursues next.
The Future of Softball at Green Hope:
When Mr. Baldyga heard that Jacobs was leaving and a new coach would be needed, he stepped up. He had already coached softball before Green Hope and worked as a team parent for the Green Hope girls’ basketball team, as well as being a parent to player Rachael Baldyga, so he was perfect for the role. “I’m excited to share this experience with him before I leave for college,” said Baldyga.
It is very clear that Coach Baldyga is a personal and caring coach. Umbra stated, “He’s really nice, and he cares about his players a lot. He works on technique with all of us and has already helped me improve my throwing.” “He brings a level of passion and work ethic we’ve never had within the program,” Rachael adds. This passion and work ethic have already led to many victories this season as compared to the previous years. Rachael states, “We are having success in places we haven’t seen before.” With the current breakthroughs under Coach Baldyga, the future is looking bright for the softball team.
Mr. Baldyga has brought energy and culture to the team that is really resonating with players. He has already inspired a great deal of success and is sure to bring more; Green Hope is lucky to have him.
