“Even when we’re facing the scary stuff, it’s the love that matters.” Eric Dane’s character Mark Sloan of long-running TV special Grey’s Anatomy spoke this line before the character died just hours later. Many people can relate to this final message including Eric Dane himself, who led his life through compassion and love for his costars and family. While, sadly, Dane passed on Feb. 19, his legacy will continue to persevere through those who he impacted.
Dane was born on Nov. ninth, 1972, and while he had a quiet beginning into show business in 1991 on “Saved By the Bell!”, his later roles would throw him into stardom. The first big role that many people know Dane from is Grey’s Anatomy, where he played Mark “McSteamy” Sloan. He would later be known for his role in Euphoria (2019) as the infamous Cal Jacobs, Nate Jacobs’ father.
However, the actor’s life would be rocked by a diagnosis of a disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease that destroys nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing muscle weakness, paralysis and loss of motor function. Dane reported experiencing minor symptoms of this disease all the way back in 2023, with an initial weakness in his right hand. It wouldn’t be until April of 2025 that Dane would announce his diagnosis.
With the announcement of his diagnosis, Dane would use his fame to raise awareness for the disease. He became a partner with an organization named “I AM ALS” to launch the $1 billion ‘Push for Progress’ campaign, a project that would expand ALS research and resources. Dane also raised awareness for the disease through interviews and other forms of media where he would describe daily life for someone living with ALS.
Sadly, his work was cut short when Dane passed away due to ALS-related complications. But, while Dane is no longer alive to keep fighting, so many people still suffer with this disease day-to-day. Today, around 30,000 to 33,000 Americans suffer from ALS, with 5,000 new cases being diagnosed annually.
Dane spent the last year of his life fighting for the lives of many others who had just as long as he had, but despite all of those efforts, ALS is still a very unknown disease that has been continuously researched over 155 years. It is unknown in the way that scientists still don’t know what causes ALS, don’t know a solid way to diagnose such a disease and still don’t know of a cure. All we know in modern day medicine is the symptoms, the general lifespan of someone after initial symptoms and temporary solutions that slow the decline.
In the wake of Dane’s passing, many costars and lifelong friends have shared just how amazing of a friend and father he was. Many costars described him as a kind man who was always prepared for anything, who always held a sharp wit about him no matter the situation. Beyond being a good friend, he is remembered as an amazing father who always carried his family in his heart when he was away. Even in the face of ALS, Dane’s lifelong friend, Grey’s Anatomy co-star Patrick Dempsey, praised Dane’s courage and grace when handling the debilitating disease, stating that he never failed to be an amazing human being.
Eric Dane was an amazing friend and even better father despite dealing with such a tragic disease these past few years. Many fans will remember him for the roles he played, but others will remember him for the advocacy that brought awareness to such a detrimental disease. While change is not immediate, the legacy that Eric Dane has left will continue for years to come, even in his absence.
