This year’s Australian Open was filled with historic landmarks, excitement and upsets. After a three-hour and two-minute match, world number one Carlos Alcaraz made history. He became the youngest men’s player to complete the career slam, meaning that he won all four major championships, called Grand Slams, at least once. There are four Grand Slams in a calendar year: The Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and The U.S. Open. Each of the championships is played on its own surface in different countries with unique traditions and events. Alcaraz had to get past Novak Djokovic in the final 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5. Djokovic, who was vying for his elusive 25th slam, fell short once again.
Tennis can be a mental game where a player’s mindset can make or break their performance. In his post-match press conference after his finals win, Alcaraz cited one of the contributors to his win as his mindset, saying he was “hungry for more, ambitious for getting the trophy and being strong mentally enough, not hearing anything or any words from the people.” His career grand slam marks a shift in his career to a name that will be talked about in tennis forever, making him one of the greats of the sport.
On the women’s side of the bracket, world number one Aryna Sabalenka reached her fourth consecutive final at the slam. While she claimed the title in 2023 and 2024, she fell short in 2025 and again this year. Elena Rybakina got revenge on Sabalenka from her 2023 defeat in the final, claiming her second Grand Slam title in a nail-biting 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 after winning Wimbledon in 2022.
The 2026 Australian Open revealed promise in many young players. At just 18 years old, American phenomenon Iva Jovic achieved a career best at the tournament, reaching her first grand slam semi-final. On her path there, she beat the number seven seed Jasmine Paolini to obtain her first top ten win, a major milestone. Although she fell to the number one seed, Aryna Sabalenka, 3-6, 0-6 in the semi-final, Jovic showed that she was here to stay amongst the top players despite her young age.
Another young American player also stood out at the Australian Open. 20-year-old Learner Tien reached the men’s quarter finals for a personal best performance at a grand slam. Tien had had a breakout run at the 2025 Australian Open, where he upset Daniil Medvedev in a close five-set second-round match. He also won the 2025 Next Gen ATP Finals, which is a tournament meant to showcase future tennis talents below the age of 20. This win cemented him as an up-and-coming player to watch out for during the 2026 season.
For every younger player that found success, there was also an older player filling another chapter in their career at the tournament. 2014 Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka closed out this chapter of his career in a loss to Taylor Fritz. He did not go out without a fight, however, taking the second set 6-2 and giving Fritz a run for his money. Wawrinka remained on court after the match for a ceremony to commemorate his past achievements and plans on retiring from professional tennis at the end of the 2026 season.
The iconic Gael Monfils is another player who closed out his Australian Open career this season with a first-round loss. Monfils is a player known for his immense speed and agility on court, creating crazy shots and leading to entertaining gameplay. He also plans to retire at the end of the 2026 season, leaving behind a lively legacy.
Clearly, the 2026 Australian Open was filled with action, historic landmarks and rising stars. Whether Alcaraz or Rybakina continues to win Grand Slams this year, this is going to be an exciting year for tennis that will be an entertaining watch.
