As the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams fall, the stage for Super Bowl LX (60) is set for the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks to face off. This year’s Super Bowl will take place on Feb. 8, in Santa Clara, California at Levi’s Stadium.
Coming from the National Football Conference (NFC), the Seattle Seahawks enter the Super Bowl after a dominant season, possessing the one seed from having the best record in their conference. In the postseason, the Seahawks entered the divisional round by dismantling their rival 49ers 41-6. The next round, in the championship, Seattle beat the Rams in a closer game, ending 31-27, to make it to the Super Bowl.
Seattle Quarterback Sam Darnold looks to finish off his strong season with a win in the biggest game to prove his doubters wrong. No more than two or three seasons ago, Sam Darnold was considered a bust, a wasted draft pick, and a failed QB. Now, Darnold becomes the first quarterback of his draft class to make the Super Bowl and looks to finally win big. He leads an electric Seahawks offense with rising superstar Jaxon Smith-Njigba at wide receiver. Additionally, their team is paired with a dominant defense that reminds some fans of their legacy “Legion of Boom” defense.
The New England Patriots enter this Super Bowl holding the #2 seed from the American Football Conference (AFC) and an impressive 14-3 record, yet they remain a topic of heavy debate. While supporters point to Drake Maye’s MVP-worthy season and a top-tier defense as proof of their powerhouse status, skepticism follows the team into the championship game. Many critics argue that the Patriots are not truly worthy, citing the team’s lack of strength in their regular season schedule and uncanny luck. Throughout the postseason the Patriots have found themselves with the advantage, playing heavily injured teams and being favored by weather conditions has only added to the belief of the team’s illegitimate playoff run. Whether they can overcome these personal losses on the world’s biggest stage remains the ultimate question hanging over Foxburrow and the area of New England as a whole.
Super Bowl LX will also be a rematch of a previous Super Bowl matchup, Super Bowl XLIX (49), in which the Patriots faced the Seahawks. Super Bowl XLIX is best known for its heartbreaking ending. As the Seahawks were down 28-24 with barely any time left on the clock, they got the ball to the goalline with one chance to score. Unfortunately, the Seahawks threw an interception to end the game, giving the Patriots the victory. Some Seahawks fans await the Super Bowl anxiously, dreading history repeating itself, while others look forward to getting their revenge against New England.
Outside of the big game, Bad Bunny is set to perform this year’s halftime show. Bad Bunny (also known as Benito Antonio) will add the Super Bowl to his resume this year after just making Grammy history with his album “DeBí TiRAR MáS FOTos,” becoming the first all-Spanish-language album to win album of the year. Some fans of the NFL have been opposed to the selection of Bad Bunny, possibly due to his anti-ICE position, stating they would like a more “American” artist. In Antonio’s Grammy speech, he stated, “ICE Out,” adding “We’re not savages, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens, we are humans and we are Americans”. The NFL, however, has committed to their selection of Bad Bunny, additionally announcing the band Green Day to play the opening ceremony. Billie Joe Armstrong and Green Day have used their platform with the band to always speak for what they believe is right, not shying away from heavy political opinions and controversies. The band themselves recently have been giving their own anti-ICE statements in the middle of live performances.
This opens the window for these Super Bowl artists to speak their mind and use the biggest stage as a platform for their voices this year. While some may see it as a controversy, Roger Goodell and the NFL have continued to stand behind their chosen artists and support their upcoming performances.
There’s something to love for everyone in this year’s Super Bowl, as NFL fans can look forward to a change of teams in the championship and fans of pop culture can enjoy what look to be spectacular performances. Be sure to tune in Sunday to watch the Seattle Seahawks face off against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX.
