While most students struggle to balance academics with extracurricular activities, Green Hope Junior Kate Bell (‘27) takes this challenge head on, maintaining two demanding sports. Between the fast-paced intensity of lacrosse and the strategic sprinting of flag football, Bell demonstrates not only athletic versatility, but also extreme dedication and leadership that sets her apart from other students.
Bell’s journey with lacrosse began in kindergarten, inspired by her brothers, who first introduced her to the sport. What started with family influence quickly grew into a lifelong passion, which she has continued ever since. While working harder to perform at the sport, Bell has caught the eye of colleges and universities with her recent commitment to Meredith College, pursuing both her academic and athletic career.
As for flag football, she had joined last year during its first season, eager to see how it would turn out. “As soon as we started, I saw so much potential, and I just loved seeing the positivity from girls that had never even touched a football before. Being a part of the first ever team and just watching it grow was an amazing experience that I’ve loved being a part of,” explained Bell. As a captain of the team and an all-conference award winner, her presence not only elevated the team’s performance, but also became a motivator for her teammates with her positive attitude and energetic personality.
Sports don’t always come so easily, however. They come with drawbacks such as extreme pressure. “Juggling multiple sports, school and jobs is very difficult, and they often bleed into each other. Carrying burdens from something that happened before practice or a game into that atmosphere doesn’t help me perform well. Knowing that I need to be where my feet are is very important to me, and focusing on where I am at that moment helps me perform the best I can,” reflects Bell.
For Bell, her faith and her loved ones give her the power and motivation to persevere through the pressure and obstacles. The reassurance from her family and friends on and off the field keep her going more than they know, and she is forever grateful for them. “Knowing the sacrifices a lot of people in my life have made for me to play on that higher club team, travel across the country for that tournament or tryout really continues to motivate me,” Bell states. With a strong foundation for faith, family and perseverance, she truly gives her all.
Above all things, for Bell, the most special portion of athletics is the people and connections she’s created along the way. “I love all of the friendships I’ve gained from playing sports and the memories I’ve made,” she said. As she continues to balance lacrosse and flag football, Bell hopes to inspire others to embrace challenges and find joy in the memories that sports create. Her journey shows that success is measured not only in achievements, but in the community built throughout.
