Playing a sport at the college level is a milestone that many athletes aspire to reach, but only a few achieve. For Kelcey Morris (‘26), her decision to journey to Belmont Abbey College to play Division II soccer has been defined by her leadership, hard work and the community that built her. When asked what made Belmont Abbey College the right choice, she confidently said, “The team and community felt like a good family that I wanted to be a part of… The high academic expectation was crucial for me as well.”

The moment Morris found out she was given an opportunity to be a part of this new community was truly special to her. “It was truly a long process. I got a phone call when I was sitting with my family, when I heard the news. My parents and family were very proud of me, and I was just excited to play soccer at the next level,” she said, remembering a moment filled with pride and relief after a long time of effort and anticipation.
Morris’ commitment to Belmont Abbey was an important achievement for her. It’s something that the Green Hope Women’s Soccer team and her coach, Ms. Jensen, take a lot of pride in. Jensen describes how she felt when she first found out about Morris’ commitment. “I was incredibly proud of her and excited for her. I know when she gets there, she’s going to make her team and her coaches really proud too.” Ms. Jensen explained. “I think it’s really hard to go in and be a natural leader at a new school, but her confidence and her experience will definitely help her shine. She’s a backbone of our program and leads by example on and off the field. I know she’s going to do the same thing when she gets to college.”

Her growth has been closely tied to her community and team at Green Hope. “I’ve learned how to be a leader and I’ve built many meaningful relationships with my teammates and coaches.“ Morris shared. Her leadership definitely hasn’t gone unnoticed by her team, coaches or recruiters at the next level. Morris’ mindset looking ahead is filled with eagerness for everything the college game has in store for her. “The level of competition, building even more friendships and just getting a chance to play the sport for four more years is what I’m looking forward to most,” she said, highlighting the small wins she wants to cherish.
For younger athletes who have started this journey in high school, her advice is simple. “The most important thing is not to quit. Just keep playing, that’s what’s important.” Morris’ commitment to collegiate soccer is a representation of her resilience and effort. Belmont Abbey is getting a great player and leader in Morris!
