February is Black History Month, and these famous figures have made significant strides in civil rights. Making a lasting impact on history, these figures have inspired future generations to come. 

LeBron James

Changing the game of basketball, LeBron’s journey has had a humble beginning. As he transformed into one of the most successful basketball players of all time, he served as an inspiration for many young African Americans. Having founded the LeBron James Family Foundation and the “I PROMISE School,” James is actively involved in uplifting the youth. These foundations provided schooling opportunities for the youth who are less fortunate. By using his fame and influence, he has empowered and uplifted the African American communities giving inspiration to all.

Denzel Washington

Since the beginning of his career, Denzel Washington has broken barriers as an African American actor. He successfully portrays diverse and complex characters and expands the opportunities for other African American in the film industry. Washington’s acting career has been on an upward trajectory and many have enjoyed  several of his films such as “Malcom X.” This film’s purpose was to pay tribute to the icon Malcom X who argued for black power and encouraged racial pride. “Remember the Titans” was also an influential film which followed a local school board’s journey through integration, forcing a school football team to come together and set aside their differences. Several Denzel Washington films focus on social issues, such as racism, inequality and corruption, forcing viewers to think about the harsh reality that African Americans face in the United States.

Carmelo Anthony

Carmelo Anthony is a professional basketball player and an influential figure in the African American community. He’s not just an amazing basketball player but also a social justice activist. He founded the Carmelo Anthony Foundation where he helps families and children who live in impoverished areas by funding and providing educational reinforcement as well as donation services. His outspokenness on issues like social justice issues inspires young African American to use their voice. Ciara Wiseman, a member of Green Hope’s Black Student Association (BSA) said, “Carmelo Anthony has made a huge impact on my athletic journey as he was someone I grew up watching. I used to want to be a professional basketball player and I would watch and study him in his games and try to replicate the things he did. He’s been a big influence on not only me but many black kids who are interested in sports as a whole.” Carmelo Anthony’s impact is beyond basketball which makes him an influential figure.

Drake

Drake is a top artist among the charts not solely for his sound, but because of how he has spread awareness to the harsh reality of people living in impoverished neighborhoods. Drake has a large platform where he promotes up and coming African American artists.  Jayden Grier, a student at Green Hope, touched upon how the artist impacted listeners like him. “Drake is one of my favorite rappers because he uses his voice to raise awareness of racism to young African American in the United States like me,” he said. His lyrics often touch upon racism and inequality where he vocalizes to a younger audience about systematic racism and the struggles of being a minority in a community. With his voice and platform he has inspired both young and old generations, helping spread the awareness to each and every ear.
