During the winter, there are a variety of inconveniences that can hinder your driving. Don’t fret though, because Felicity Falcon has got tips to ensure safe driving! Photo used with permission from Darwin Vegher on Unsplash

During the winter, there are a variety of driving inconveniences that arise: from bitter cold weather to icy roads and dark mornings to snowy environments, winter weather is a significant driving hindrance. However, as Green Hope’s Advice-Giver-in-Chief, I will explain how you can drive more safely during these times!

What do I do if my car doesn’t start up?

During the colder seasons, you may come across changes to your car that are uncontrollable. This can include your car’s battery and alternator. Low temperatures affect the chemicals inside your car battery, which then reduces the battery’s ability to hold charge. Additionally, colder weather thickens the car oil, which makes it difficult for your car’s motor to start. If this happens, repeatedly turn your car key to start for around five minutes. If this method doesn’t work, call roadside service.

What do I do if I can’t see through my windshield due to ice?

If you cannot see through the windshield of your car, do not start driving. You need to make sure that you have full visibility through the windshield to be safe. You can get defrost spray, which will melt the ice for a short cut, or you can turn the airing on in your car to ensure that hot air is fully blasting on your windshield. After five to ten minutes, your windshield should be clear to look out of. If you don’t want to be late for school or another function, start heating up your car before you get ready, and leave the car running.

What should I do if I start skidding on ice?

When there are icy roads you want to make sure you are not driving fast. However, in the case where you skid on ice, there are a few things you should do. Keep your foot off the accelerator to slow down. Meanwhile, you have to be gentle on the steering as well as with the brakes and the accelerator. Make sure in this event that you are steering where the ice is skidding your car to. You can alarm other cars by using your hazards.

What is the best way to avoid black ice?

Black ice is not visible and is very dangerous to drive on. The best thing to do when you’re not sure if there is black ice or not is to not drive at all. If you do encounter black ice, then you need to avoid the brakes and steer straight to where you’re going to reduce any harm when driving on it.

How do I stay safe driving in the dark?

When it is dark outside, there are many things to consider when driving. Keep in mind that it is also colder at night than during the day. If you are going to drive, you have to make sure you are alert and not tired. You should also have your lights on, so cars can see you and you can see the road. As always you should make sure your mirrors are adjusted. You should drive slower than you may usually drive, because it is harder to see at night.

Overall these are my top tips for driving in the colder seasons. If you have any questions, ask in the comment section! I always love to help. Make sure you are driving safely, and I hope that these tips help and educate you in case these instances ever happen. Felicity out!
