In a dominant win over Triangle Math and Science, the highlight for the girls varsity basketball team was a two-point basket by Abigail Brown in the first half. In her fourth year as a varsity starter, Abigail Brown (‘25) scored her 1,000th point in her 71st career game. In addition to her benchmark point total, she also grabbed her 500th rebound.
To follow up on this milestone, the GH Falcon caught up with Brown to discuss what factors contributed to this achievement. Self-confidence is one of the key components of all athletes’ performance. Being confident in your abilities helps keep athletes concentrated on the game and increases the amount of effort they put in. Brown mentioned how this impacted her goals, saying, “Once I started believing that I could do it, scoring that 1,000th point was easy for me.” Leading up to the season, Brown also mentioned that this milestone was something she had set out to achieve, and described how seeing her goals become reality was such an incredible feeling.
Leading up to this moment, having a strong support system was another crucial component of Brown’s success. Brown claimed in an interview that her dad was the most influential piece of her support. Clarence “Chucky” Brown played in the NBA for 13 years and won an NBA championship during his time in the league. Using the knowledge gained from such a successful professional career, Chucky Brown has trained his daughter into an incredible player herself. Abigail Brown claimed, “We go to the gym a lot together. He’s definitely my biggest supporter so he helped me believe in myself to reach 1000 points.” With 16 games remaining in the high school regular season, Brown still has much success to look forward to.
With conference play starting tomorrow, Brown is confident in the team moving forward. With a 5-0 record, the Falcons have solidified themselves as the second-ranked team in 4A East per MaxPreps. Looking at the future, Brown said that “I think that we will do really well and hopefully we can win conference.” With plenty of games to go, Brown and the rest of the team are fully capable of achieving whatever it is they set their minds to.
Reflecting on her other accomplishments thus far, Brown shared that prior to the season, she would have thought that 500 rebounds would come well before the 1,000 points. Brown claimed that, “I feel like rebounding is a big part of my game, and so is scoring, but I feel like rebounding just comes easier.” Finishing her most recent game having achieved both goals, Brown looked back on her first point as a Freshman on varsity and reflected on her growth up until this point.
As a signed college athlete, Brown’s future is bright and these accomplishments are just the start of what’s to come. Now in her senior year, Brown is prepared to lead the Falcons in her final high school season.
