Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity (DEI) programs are a popular topic across the United States because of President Trump’s recent ban under his executive order “Ending radical and wasteful government DEI programs and preferencing”. DEI programs are meant to increase inclusivity in all forms of work and government, without excluding a person based upon race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation or disability. The Trump administration sees Former President Biden’s DEI programs as “illegal and immoral”, and plans on combating this with implementing various laws to root out these programs.
Trump’s administration is going after DEI programs by implementing the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the Director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) positions. Matthew Vaeth, the director of OMB and the OPM agency will be reviewing all DEI and DEIA programs. They will work along with the Attorney General, if necessary, to dismantle and expel all programs from America. This plan will tackle all sources and representations of DEI involved in every frame of work, ranging from Environmental justice positions to expenditures used in support of DEI.
The DEI ban is particularly being targeted towards the military, with certain curriculum being removed from their education. The Air Force has already begun shutting down DEI offices and programs in response to President Trump’s executive order.
In regard to the executive order, the Tuskegee Airmen expressed a strong disappointment over the potential removal of their history from the Air Force curriculum. Later, in response, the Air Force ensured that they will not be removing the Tuskegee Airmen from the program. Although these groups’ efforts will be taught in the Air Force, it cannot account for other minorities involved in the military.
Trump’s ban on DEI aims to dissolve “discrimination programs” and end preferences based upon sex or race. When this ban is in effect it allows jobs to refuse a person, in hiring, based solely upon race. In his other executive order issued on Jan. 20, he claims inserting factors such as race puts risk to the government and to losing the qualified workers. His Jan. 20 executive order targets federal hiring, as the order states the jobs must not favor in terms of race and to insure that the employee is “willing to defend the constitution or to faithfully serve the executive branch”. If all requirements are met President Trump ensures to offer citizens the federal resources and services they deserve.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is being banned across America, in response to a series of executive orders sent out by the newly appointed President Trump. These bans target inclusivity programs within the government and prevents minorities from being hired based upon their race. Major companies have already started rolling back on DEI and implementing bans. Brands and companies, such as McDonald’s, Amazon and Walmart have already taken up on the ban with pressure from President Trump’s orders.
Companies that have doubled down on their support for DEI in response to the ban include Apple, Costco, Microsoft and Sony. These companies have shown their support for DEI programs and are reinforcing DEI within their businesses.
