Spoilers Ahead! Proceed with Caution:
The new season of “Outer Banks” left fans shocked and wanting more. There were many twists and turns in this new season including dirt bike races, traversing catacombs and some shocking cliffhangers. Did these new episodes live up to the expectations and success of previous seasons?
The season began with some unfortunate twists. The finale of season 3 ended with the Pogues finding the City of Gold, El Dorado. They discovered unlimited riches, but when they revealed the amount of money they received, it was much less than expected. They only had a grand total of around one million dollars, in contrast to the city they discovered made completely out of gold.
With this underwhelming but still undeniably large amount of money, the Pogues set out to start their own business. Despite some immediate success, they blew most of their money on setting it up. The show wouldn’t be interesting if no issues arose, so of course, the plot had to come along in the form of a devastating hurricane wreaking havoc. Since the group already spent the majority of their money, they couldn’t pay for repairs and their business was in danger.
This issue led to JJ Maybanks taking the spotlight of the show this time around, where he would remain throughout the season. As usual, the stubborn, hotheaded and quick thinking character took the matter into his own hands, betting their last bit of money on himself to win a dirt bike race. JJ loses in an intense race with the Kooks, deepening the rivalry between these two groups. It seemed to be a quick way to move the plot along, rather than creating a more sophisticated and well developed story.
Out of money and losing hope, the Pogues turn to the same solution as they have consistently in the past: treasure hunting. When a mysterious benefactor offers them a large amount of cash in exchange for finding treasure left by Blackbeard, the crew immediately hops on the offer. This aspect of the show felt painfully repeated, as this has been the plot for every season. They did manage to work in some new aspects of the treasure hunt with traveling to other places, but the repeated fleeing from enemies and cops, diving for treasure and rivalry with the Kooks has been the same for the whole show.
The new season was split into two releases, with the first one on Oct. 10 and the second part on Nov. 7. At the end of the first part, fans were left with a massive cliffhanger, learning that JJ was not actually a Maybank, and was really the son of the mysterious benefactor they were working for. When the second part of the season was released, more details were acquired, adding a massive plot twist to the story.
Throughout the season, there were the usual fights, sneaking around and “what are we going to do?” moments, but the show came to a dramatic end as the Pogues traveled to Morocco in search of treasure. In a stunning season finale, they find the treasure, only for it to be stolen and for JJ to be stabbed and killed by his own father. In all honesty, this was not too unexpected as JJ defied death in too many cases throughout the show and especially the most recent season. He was put in some deadly situations and his luck had to eventually run out.
Despite this tragic turn, the new season was overall a success. While it followed some of the same repetitive trends as the show normally does, it introduced some plot twists that gave it a new and exciting feel. However, we see Rafe, an arch enemy of the group throughout the whole show, be put alongside the Pogues in the last few episodes. After the whole show having a focus on their rivalry, it seemed strange to create a connection between these groups.
While the new season of “Outer Banks” had some interesting plot twists and scenes, it overall seemed to have some aspects that were rushed or weren’t well thought out. There were a lot of predictable scenes and repeated aspects of the show. However, the show is still vaguely interesting and the new season has been seen as a success among many fans.
