Every athlete has inspiration for their sport, whether it comes from a parent, a professional athlete or a friend. Who better to motivate and encourage an athlete than their sibling? This is the case for Jerry “JT” (‘26) and Jack (‘27) Sarchet, wrestlers for the Green Hope team.
JT Sarchet, the older brother, has been wrestling for 7 years. He first started wrestling when his dad signed him up in kindergarten. With the Green Hope wrestling team, he doesn’t consider his many victories as his main successes with the team. Instead, he said, “Wrestling is where I met a lot of my friends when I first moved here.”
Over the years, JT has received motivation and encouragement from his brother Jack. JT discussed a short lapse from wrestling and how Jack helped him get back on track, saying, “I did wrestling from kindergarten to 4th grade, but then I quit and forgot a lot of stuff. Jack kept wrestling and he helped me remember a lot and get back into it.” Jack’s motivation helped him regain his skills and get him to where he is now, thriving and succeeding with Green Hope.
JT has big plans for his future, but they differ greatly from Jack’s. JT stated, “I know Jack wants to go to college, but I don’t want to.” Jack elaborated on this, saying, “I know he wants to go into the military. I think for him, wrestling will really help him through that.” While JT doesn’t want to continue wrestling past high school, the lessons he takes will help him throughout his life.
Jack Sarchet (‘27), the younger of the two, has been wrestling for 11 years. He had a much different and unconventional introduction to wrestling, to which he said, “When I was younger, I used to watch a lot of WWE on the TV, so when I saw a poster for wrestling at a high school my dad taught at, I started doing it and thought I was going to go learn how to wrestle in the WWE. Obviously, I didn’t.” Despite his initial confusion, he stuck with the sport and got to where he is now.
Jack is only in his sophomore year, but he has already seen success at Green Hope. He detailed his success, saying, “Last year, I was one of two freshmen to qualify for states. It was me and Gavin Lopez.” This major success came in his first year of high school wrestling, and he will continue to perform impressively for Green Hope.
Jack couldn’t have achieved his accomplishments without help and guidance from JT. He talked about how JT helped him, saying, “JT set an example on what to be because he’s always been a grade above me. Even when we wrestled for other schools, it was good to see how he’d do in practice, and I’d try to live up to that.” JT’s example led Jack to be the strong and disciplined wrestler he is now.
Jack also discussed his future plans, where he wants to continue his wrestling career. “My plans for wrestling in the future are to do as best I can in high school, get my name out to any colleges, and see if I get any offers from good colleges with academics as well. Hopefully I can get a scholarship to one of those.” With his current performance, he is certainly capable of fulfilling his dream and taking wrestling to the next level.
Jack and JT are both staples in the roster of Green Hope wrestling, and both are where they are because of the support and encouragement they receive from each other. Their success with the wrestling team and connection with each other truly makes them super siblings.
