Two weeks after Hurricane Helene made landfall, communities in Western NC still lack access to clean water, food, power and other necessities. Despite this tragedy, a beautiful story of teamwork is emerging.
People nationwide have rallied with the southern states through fundraisers, food drives, and volunteer relief efforts and now Green Hope High School is too. Staff members are organizing a year-long Hurricane Relief Drive to support victims of the hurricane. All items will be donated to location organizations.
When people think of items to donate, typically they think of the most basic necessities of life: food and water. Although those donations are helpful, many towns and cities are being flooded with them and left searching for other necessary items. For example, baby products are just as crucial, yet so many people forget about them. Personal hygiene products such as shampoo, conditioner and deodorant are also needed throughout the affected regions.
Students and families are welcome to donate bottled water and canned goods, but toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, baby formula, baby food, diapers and baby wipes are the most pressing. Items can be dropped off in the commons area or in the rooms of club sponsors.
The recovery process for the western region will be ongoing, so Green Hope will be accepting donations throughout the school year. Ryan Mitchell, a relief volunteer from Hendersonville, North Carolina described the recovery process as, “a sprint, not a marathon” and emphasized the importance of continuous support throughout the next few months.
Despite the press coverage lessening and life seemingly returning back to “normal”, there is still a long road ahead. Any donation is helpful during this time as many families begin to rebuild their lives. Assistant Principal Mrs. Miah Vereen is coordinating this drive and encourages students to contribute. “When you have the capacity to give, even a small contribution can make a meaningful impact.” If you are able, please consider donating to this fund as supplies are desperately needed throughout Western North Carolina. Supplies can be dropped off in the commons or in boxes throughout the school.
