Looking for a good fright this Halloween season? Phillips Farm is a widely popular destination for families, friends and anyone seeking a scare. With a large variety of activities, it is sure to be as busy as ever this year. But what is Phillips Farm, and what goes into the creation of this Halloween favorite for everyone?
Jake Major (‘25), a student at Green Hope, works as one of the scarers at Phillips Farm. The GH Falcon sat down with him and asked him about what goes into making Phillips Farm such a popular Halloween season site. Jake works in one of the haunted houses at Phillips Farm. For his job, he dons his makeup, puts on his terrifying outfit and gives a scare to whoever comes through.
Phillips Farm isn’t limited to this one house, though. There is plenty that they have to offer, and Major described the various features. He said, “There’s four attractions. Two haunted houses, a hayride and a corn maze. There’s people in costumes who’ll walk around outside so you can interact with them. There’s a lot of food and I think there’s a bar.”
Much work goes into giving a scare at Phillips Farm, as outlined by Major. “The workers have to get their own outfit. They give us some makeup, but if you want an actual outfit, you have to get it for yourself. We usually get there around 6:45 and the houses open at 8:00. We do our makeup for about an hour or so and then get started,” he described. He also discussed changes to the farm, with the addition of new spooky music to provide an extra chill.
Phillips Farm is a lot more than just a destination for fun. Major discussed that during the day, Phillips Farm switches from scaring to caring and are currently working to help those affected by the recent devastating hurricanes. They are currently doing a drive to help with this cause and do good for their community. In addition to this, they also have a seven-acre corn maze, sunflower fields and wagon rides for entertainment during the day.
Once the day ends, the nighttime festivities open again. The farm opens at 8:00 and closes at 11:00, but Major talked about what he thought was the best time to go for a good scare. He said, “It’s pretty much the same throughout the night, but I think a lot of the scarers start to lose energy. If you want to be scared, I’d go earlier, but it might not be as scary because it’s not as dark. I’d say 9 o’clock is the best time to go.”
Phillips Farm is a widely popular attraction during Halloween season, and it is made better by the care and effort put into it by its employees, working together to make the best night for its visitors. It is a $25 entry for hours of fun and it’s guaranteed to be a fun and frightening destination for everyone.
