Green Hope senior, Caleb Kim (‘25), is committed to multiple extracurricular activities both during and after the school days. Since he was young, he always had an interest in helping others. Because of his desire to help the community, Kim was driven to join Key Club at Green Hope.
According to Kim, “Key Club is a student-led organization that focuses on community service and building leadership skills.” At first, Kim was worried that he wouldn’t truly make an impact, however he was quickly corrected when he realized that the club participates in different volunteering events, fundraisers and projects.
Kim has been a member since his freshman year and when asked to outline the application process, he claimed that “while it seems intimidating at first, once you start the work you realize it’s not as difficult as it seems.”
First, there is a written application and once that is approved, there is an in person interview. For Kim, the hardest part of the process was the in person interview. “In the interview, you are asked to recite the Key Club pledge and respond to just a few questions about yourself and your character,” he recalled.
Once applicants have been interviewed and approved, they’re a part of the club. Meetings are held once a month and consist of an information session followed by a game of some sort. This game could be trivia, icebreakers or other team building activities.
During his time at Key Club, Kim has learned many valuable life lessons. “I learned the importance of service and how help can go a long way and that there is more to volunteering than completing work,” he said.
On top of real world knowledge, he also gained friends and relationships he wouldn’t have established without Key Club. Kim said, “This club also introduced me to new people that I’ve built cool relationships with. I never would have thought I would have become friends with half of these people and now I call them my friends.”
Overall, Kim has loved being in the club and developing skills that he wouldn’t have otherwise had. He said, “Not only is it a great way to find new volunteer opportunities and discover new skills, but it is also a great way to tap into your community and find new friends who share the same passion for service as you do.”
Caleb Kim credits a large portion of his high school success to stepping out of his comfort zone and joining Key Club. He has loved helping the growth of both Green Hope and the community around it. “I’m so fortunate to have this opportunity that not all students have,” he said.
