Last week, the Green Hope women’s lacrosse team played their last game in playoffs, signaling the end of the 2023-2024 season. The varsity team averaged an overall 17-5 win, securing the spot of third in the Southwest Wake conference.
Kayla Nguyen (‘24), one of the three senior captains on varsity, shared her thoughts on the season. “I think that the season went really well, and I think we’ve played better than we did in all the other seasons I’ve been on varsity.” Ngyuen also commented on her personal growth this season, expressing how she’s seen herself grow as an athlete this season as well. “One of the biggest things that has been different this season was collaboration and team bonding. In previous years, we’ve argued over different things and sometimes over losses, but this year, we’ve always been able to work it out and we’ve gotten closer as a team.”
The varsity girls wrapped off their regular season strong with a 22-5 win against Cary, and finished the first round of playoffs with a 20-2 win against Heritage. The team dominated the second round of playoffs with a 20-7 win against Willow Springs, but fell short with a 19-12 loss against Topsail.
Another senior captain, Delaney Cowen (‘24), also commented on how well the girls performed this season. “We did really really well- I think if we had stayed a little more focused during after-school practices, I think we could have performed even better but overall, I’m still really happy with the way we played.”
Both Ngyuen and Cowen hope that the 2024-25 varsity season performs even better, expressing how they would like them to make it farther in the playoffs than they could accomplish this year. When asked about their advice to underclassmen, Kayla and Cowen both expressed how important it is to stick with the sport and always believe in yourself, even when things do not go as planned.
As they’ve wrapped up their senior seasons, Cowen and Ngyuen say farewell to Green Hope Lacrosse, and although they do not plan to play lacrosse at the collegiate level, they do plan on joining club lacrosse at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The Green Hope girls varsity lacrosse team will return in the spring of next year as they fight fiercely to win the title of State Champions.
