Films

2023 was a phenomenal year for gaming and a decent year for movies and shows. However, unlike 2023, it isn’t too early to tell what will dominate the media industry in 2024, as it seems that movies will be the year’s highlight. Even so, we’ve rounded up some of the most anticipated movies, games, and TV shows set to be released in 2024.

Dune: Part Two: Originally set to release back in Nov. 2023, this film continues the journey of Paul Atriedes, played by Timothée Chalamet, out for revenge on those who destroyed his family while trying to prevent a terrible future from occurring. Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, and Stellen Skarsgard will all be returning for the sequel. There will also be new additions to the cast including Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Lea Seydoux, and Christopher Walken. The mystery and allure of “Dune” will flow back into theaters on Mar. 1.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes: Seven years after the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy starring Andy Serkis as Caesar came to a close, the franchise will return in 2024. The new installment will be set three hundred years after the events of “War for the Planet of the Apes,” and will kick off a new trilogy with a different leading protagonist known as Noa. The film will be helmed by Wes Ball, director of “The Maze Runner” movies, and star the likes of William H. Macy and The Witcher’s Freya Allan. The film will officially be released on May 24.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga: Nine years after the wild success of the Academy Award best picture nominee “Mad Max: Fury Road,” this new installment won’t be a continuation of that film but rather a prequel. Originally played by Charlize Theron in the original film, the prequel will see a younger version of the character, this time being played by Anya Taylor Joy. The film will see the return of the franchise writer and director George Miller, and will also star Chris Hemsworth in an unknown role. The film will race into theaters on May 24.

Alien: Romulus: Set in between the events of “Alien” and “Aliens,” the ninth installment in the long-running franchise will abandon the lore set up with previous installments “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant.” While not much has been revealed about the plot of the film, it will be directed by Fede Álvarez of “Don’t Breathe” and “Evil Dead (2013),” and will star “Priscilla” actress Caliee Speaney. The “Alien” franchise will return after seven years on Aug. 16.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire: After the success of the massively popular “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” back in 2021, the franchise will be heading back to the iconic Ghostbusters firehouse with this new installment. The film will feature the Spangler family and the original Ghostbusters uncovering an ancient artifact that unleashes an evil force into New York City, leading them to save the world from a second ice age. McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts are all set to return, with Patton Oswald and Kumail Nanjiani joining the cast. The Ghostbusters will return to the big screen on Mar. 29.

Joker: Folie à Deux: With “Joker,” released in 2019, becoming the first-ever R-rated movie to make over a billion dollars at the global box office, Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Philips will return for a sequel to that film in 2024. While not much has been revealed about the plot, the film will be more of a musical, with the casting of Lady Gaga in the role of Harley Quinn. Zazie Beetz is set to return as the character Sophie Dumond, and Brendan Gleeson was cast in an unknown role. Arthur Fleck will return five years after his last appearance in the original film on Oct. 4.

Deadpool 3: Two of Marvel’s biggest icons, Wolverine and Deadpool, will make a much-awaited return on July 26, 2024, with the release of Marvel’s Deadpool 3. This movie easily has the potential to be the best movie of the year, with Ryan Renolds returning as Deadpool, one of Marvel’s funniest characters, and Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine, the most iconic X-Man. We don’t know much outside of who will be in the film, but with the success of the previous two Deadpool movies, along with the success of Wolverine, it’s safe to say there is high expectations for this movie.

Kung Fu Panda 4: Awkwafina strikes again! The Kung Fu Panda series returns on Mar. 8, 2024, with the release of Kung Fu Panda 4. Po, played by Jack Black, must train a new face to become the Dragon Warrior, with himself becoming the spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace. With the trailer of this film already out, fans have made it clear they do not want the newest face of the series, Zhen, to be the Dragon Warrior. Zhen is a Corsac fox thief played by Awkwafina, who will be with Po throughout the movie as they face off against Viola Davis as The Chameleon, an evil shape-shifting chameleon sorceress who can copy the kung fu of others by absorbing their abilities.

Inside Out 2: With the massive success of the first movie, Inside Out 2 is easily one of the most anticipated films on this list. Arriving June 14, 2024, the film will focus on Riley, this time in her teenage years, dealing with new emotions, such as Anxiety. This movie could also be a big turnaround for Pixar, as most of their recent films, like Lightyear, have been fairly mediocre.

Madame Web: Madame Web arrives on Feb. 14, 2024. This film has the potential to be amazing, but could easily end up being a disaster as well. For most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s existence, they have stuck to fairly mainstream characters, such as Iron Man and Spider-Man. However, Madame Web is a character that can be looked over pretty easily, despite her importance in the Marvel Universe itself. With the character normally being an elderly woman, fans speculate that this film will be her origin story. The film follows Cassandra Webb as a New York City paramedic who starts to show signs of clairvoyance. The main antagonist of the film appears to be Ezekiel Sims, who shows up in a darker version of the traditional Spider-Man suit.

The Boys Season 4: Rumored to release in 2023, the newest season of The Boys will officially debut in 2024. While a release date is unknown, the season will take place days after the events of the recent spinoff “Gen V” and will feature Jeffrey Dean Morgan joining the cast in an unknown role.

Fallout: Based on the popular video game franchise, this series will tell the story of a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles during a nuclear decimation, where the remaining citizens are forced to live in underground bunkers to protect themselves from radiation, mutants, and bandits. The show will be run by Johnathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the creators of HBO’s “Westworld,” and will star Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, Aaron Clifton Moten, and Moises Arias. The show will be released on Amazon on Apr.12.

The Penguin: Set after the events of “The Batman,” this limited series will see Colin Farrell reprise his role as The Penguin, as he takes over the criminal underworld of Gotham City. Not much has been revealed about the plot of the show, however, Cristin Milioti will be playing the role of Sofia Falcone, and will also feature Clancy Brown in the role of Salvatore Maroni, a character that was heavily mentioned in “The Batman.” As the series is still in production, no release date has been set yet, but it is expected to be released sometime in fall 2024.

Creature Commandos: This highly anticipated animated series will be the first tv show set in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU. Based on the DC comic of the same name, the show will star Frank Grillo, David Harbour, Zoe Chao, Maria Bakalova, Indira Varman, Alan Tudyk, Sean Gunn, and Steve Agee. The series will also be written and directed by James Gunn and will release sometime in 2024.

Echo: Being the first Disney+ series to have all of its episodes released all at once, this spinoff from the 2021 show “Hawkeye” will debut on Jan. 9. The show will explore the character of Echo as she deals with her Native American heritage and embraces the meaning of family and community. The show will see the return of Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin and Charlie Cox as Daredevil and will see Alaqua Cox in the title role.

Avatar: The Last Airbender: Coming to Netflix on Feb. 22, 2024, this show will bring to life one of Nickelodeon’s most beloved animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. This show will follow the plot of the original series, following Aang and his friends through their journey to defeat the fire nation. However, this is not the first time we’ve had a project like this. Hopefully, this series will turn out to be better than the last live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, which is hated by a majority of the fans.

The Acolyte: The Acolyte is an upcoming television series that is a part of the Star Wars franchise. The show will take place during the High Republic era, which is 100 years before the events of the Skywalker Saga. Not too much is known about the plot of the series or the characters that will be in it. However, with the help of a basic description, the basic premise is known. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, however, the forces they will face are much more sinister than they could have thought. The main takeaway from the information currently available about this series is that the dark side of the force will be a massive part of the show, which is something that the fans have wanted for a long time.

Video games

The Last of Us 2: Remastered: The Last of Us 2 takes place five years after the events of the original game, however, unlike the first game this game is mostly based around Ellie instead of Joel. The Last of Us 2 is the first thing you think of when you hear “love-hate relationship.” Fans of this game either had a blast playing it or absolutely despised it- no in-between. Despite the mixed feelings from fans, this will no doubt be one of the biggest games coming out in 2024 due to how big of a title The Last of Us is.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League: With this being the last Batman that Kevin Conroy voices (due to his passing), fans have been hyped for the release of this game. However, last year the game was delayed once again and set to be released in 2024.

Rise of the Ronin: Amidst the chaos of war, disease, and political unrest, a nameless warrior forges their own path, holding the very fate of Japan in their hands. Set to release on Mar. 22, 2024, Rise of the Ronin allows the player to shape the future of Japan through the choices they will make. This game looks phenomenal already, with a rich multi-choice system and a seemingly amazing combat system, Rise of the Ronin could easily be a contender for Game of the Year.

Black Myth: Wukong: An upcoming action RPG about the most popular being in Chinese mythology, Sun Wukong, will be arriving on Aug. 20, 2024. This is one of the more anticipated titles of the year due to the game being a “soulslike.” This means that the game will be similar to the Dark Souls series, which seems to have a special place in the hearts of most gamers. With a gameplay demo already out, and the face of Chinese mythology being in the game, this title will undoubtedly be phenomenal.

The new year brings a chance for a fresh start and potential for many trends -- ranging from underrated drinks to essential hair products, some of the items making a comeback this year are a must-have. Photo used with permission from Mélyna Côté via Unsplash.
Self-care and wellness

Trends move quickly, and it is hard to stay on top of it all. To help out, the GH Falcon has put together a list to guide you through this coming year’s biggest trends to look out for. Are you ready to try them?

Hair care

Hair care will rise as an industry this year due to the oversaturation of skin-care products in the market. As a new form of self-care, expect hair oils, brushes and accessories to dominate the market and your social media pages!

Matcha Lattes

A drink from the Tang dynasty in ancient China may be the new “it” drink. Due to the rise of health culture, this drink will be swapping the coffees once present in the hands of consumers. Promoting focus without as much caffeine, this drink may help some decrease their caffeine intake throughout the year!

Pilates

Working out has been around for ages, but Pilates specifically will be seen rising in popularity in late spring to early summer. Working out is often promoted as a way of achieving aesthetics, but Pilates centers itself on the idea of awareness. Focusing on one’s body, its abilities and what it needs to thrive while working on strength and flexibility. Pilates is a great way to change one’s routine from one that is focused on the looks of one’s body to its internal works.

Oil Cleansers

Gunk gets trapped in one’s pores all the time, but oil cleansing allows for easy removal without being far too abrasive on the skin. Scrubs can often cause small scratches on the skin’s surface, promoting acne and bacterial growth over time. A great way to avoid the situation while remaining blackhead-free is an oil cleanser. Massage a bit into your skin and improve your look this year!

Fashion trends

Statement pieces

Personal style is important, which is why statement pieces are an essential part of dressing. Whether they are gifted made, statement pieces allow for an individual touch to an outfit. Personality is important in humanity, and therefore the same in the way one dresses. Simply find a color you are drawn to and find small accessories to match!

High socks

In late spring, high-knee socks will again make a comeback. High socks can be a great way to accentuate an ensemble no matter the setting. They come in a myriad of colors and sizes, all there is left to do is find one’s favorite!

Gold jewelry

The color of jewelry trend comes and goes every year, but gold will come to outshine silver in 2024. If you have olive or warm tones, gold jewelry will help you accentuate the color of your skin and add a touch of shine to one’s outfit. Something to look out for this year!

Large leather totes

As people continue to go back to the office, large leather bags will become essential for the daily commute. Leather is a great material- one that ages to become better rather than worse. A large leather bag with a few pockets will fit anything and last for years, a worthy investment for 2024.

Greyscale

Due to the rise in people going back to the office, pieces within the greyscale will rise along with suits and ties. Grey can be a great color to wear for people who accessorize with bold colors such as red and blue. It is easier to wear than black as it tends to clash less with accessories due to a lower contrast. So if there is a grey sweater in the closet, go find it!

There’s a large variety of different cuisines and food styles being located in Cary, Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill that are now trends to go to. Here are some of the best new restaurants to go to:

The food is based off of Louisiana cuisine and is primarily fried food. There is the signature color bright red shown throughout the restaurant and inside is specialized with UNCs on the interiors of the walls. They have a first floor and second floor for dining in, so there are many places to sit.

As well as the food, the restaurant’s interior is cultured around Vietnam, Latin America and the Mountains of Pleiku.
