Following a successful junior season with a team finish of 10th in the 4A State Championship, rising Senior Flynn Lewis (‘26) announced his commitment to Lenoir-Rhyne University on August 30, 2025. Lewis has been a crucial part of the Falcons’ Golf program for four years, leading the team to success both on and off the field. The GH Falcon recently sat down with him to inquire about his recent commitment and the motives behind his decision.
Lewis began playing golf after his move to North Carolina in fourth grade, but did not take it seriously until his Freshman year at Green Hope. He was inspired by his older brother, Jake Lewis, who had previously committed to UNC Greensboro. “I saw my brother playing really well and getting recruited to play golf at UNCG, and that’s why I started playing,” Lewis shared. He began talking to college coaches in his junior year season, inquiring about their programs and philosophies to find a fit for him. “It’s a long process. You send out emails, you message coaches on Instagram,” he shared. “It’s weird to get started, but then you’ll get their phone number, then you’ll text them. It’s like dating.”
As his level of competition and interest increased, so did his commitment to the sport. Lewis practices two hours a day on both putting and full swings. He also upped his participation in tournaments over the summer, sharing, “I played 10 or so tournaments this summer, most of them were two rounds, 36 holes on Saturday or Sunday.” His tournament schedule is primarily in the spring, with the high school season starting in the spring.
There was no single deciding factor that influenced Lewis’s decision to go to LRU, but rather a plethora of advantages the school had to offer. Its strong Division II golf program was a given, but there was more to the school that drew him in. “I know two of the people on their team pretty well,” he shared. “Lenior-Rhyne’s coach is really good friends with my brother’s coach. It also has a good golf program. They’re a high-ranked team for D2 golf.”
Being the younger sibling of an accomplished older brother who plays the same sport has its benefits for Lewis, but has also created a slight sense of pressure. “Sometimes, I’ll go talk to my high school coach, Coach Denton, and he’ll say, ‘Remember what Jake shot here, like a few years ago or something?’ And then I’ll try to beat that, but it’s tough to compete with,” he shared. Despite this, his whole family has always been into golf and motivated him to become a better teammate and a passionate player.
An accomplished player himself, he offers one last piece of advice for prospective golfers: “Just practice, and most importantly, play a lot of tournament events as they help you get better under pressure and overall will just help lower your scores.”
Lewis will compete as a Falcon one last time this spring before making his way to LRU as a Bear, and is hopeful for a successful senior season.
