As the school year winds down, many opportunities for high school students to take on internships and jobs pop up. In this article the GH Falcon will break down how to land a job and opportunities near you!
Five tips to increase your chances of getting a job:
- Having a well polished resume is tremendously helpful. Tailor your resume for the specific jobs that you are looking for and include accomplishments, experiences and relevant skills.
- Reach out to friends, family, former employers and acquaintances. Let them know you are looking for a job and ask if they are fine with providing you a referral. Having good connections can help you land a good job.
- Having well-developed interviewing skills can be beneficial for acquiring a position that you want. Make sure to research about the company and have answers to common interviewing questions. Be prepared to discuss your skills and background experience.
- After the interview make sure you send a follow up email expressing your appreciation and your interest in the position.
- Make sure you are persistent and resilient. Job hunting can be difficult so don’t give up if you don’t hear back. Have a positive attitude and keep applying.

Harris Teeter cashier – 2080 Kildaire Farm Rd, Cary, NC 27511
Harris Teeter offers flexible hours and allows students to balance school, extracurricular activities and other responsibilities. Green Hope senior Jeremy Thomas (‘24) described working at Harris Teeter. “Working at Harris Teeter is pretty great, especially the flexible hours. This lets me have time for my extracurriculars. They understand that I got school and other stuff going on. They are cool about working around my hours,” he said. “It can get busy at times, especially around 5 p.m., but it is manageable. I learned a lot of great skills like how to handle cash, deal with difficult customers and work under pressure. I also get discounts on groceries which is great for my family.” Working as a cashier you will have to be excellent in communication and interpersonal skills. The requirements are completing and succeeding in training and to be able to work with team members with different backgrounds. High schoolers can develop teamwork and collaboration skills as well as being better at talking to customers. Overall working as a Harris Teeter cashier can teach students valuable skills and it is a great job option for those who are seeking a part time job.
Life Time Fitness lifeguard – 1700 Regency Pkwy, Cary, NC 27518
Being a lifeguard can be a physically demanding job, but also a great way to make money. You would need to pass lifeguard certification and earn a first aid certificate, be able to swim 300 yards without stopping, tread water for one minute, retrieve a 10 pound brick from the bottom of the pool and swim back to the top without stopping and routinely bend to raise more than 20 pounds. You will be working in a fast paced environment, helping to oversee the pool. Responsibilities include ensuring swimmers are safe, administering first aid and keeping the pool area clean.
Prestonwood Country Club host/hostess – 300 Prestonwood Pkwy, Cary, NC 27513
Hosts must be prepared to have a professional appearance. You will need to provide excellent customer service and have availability to work nights, weekends and holidays. Green Hope senior Tucker Harland (‘24) spoke about his experience as a Prestonwood Country Club host. “Working at Prestonwood Country Club is a great experience. From the moment it started I learned a lot of valuable skills. The management team understands I am a highschool student so this helps me balance work with my other commitments,” he explained. “My job is to greet members and guests with a warm smile, and also manage reservations and seating arrangements. One of the best parts about working here is that I know everyone who eats at this restaurant, this lets me build connections and network with others who can benefit me in the future. This also enhanced my resume due to the fact that this place is such a prestigious establishment.”
