This last Friday, the anticipated new Conjuring movie hit theaters. Much of the anticipation for The Conjuring: Last Rites comes from the movie’s promotion; the movie hopes to gain its long-time fanbase’s attention by advertising the new film as the final installment of the series. Among horror fans, The Conjuring is one of the most well-known and popular franchises in the genre. The movie features a return of its long-time protagonists Ed and Lorraine Warren, based on the real life hunters of the paranormal. In the new movie, the Warrens tackle a similar threat faced in the previous movies, a family home haunted by a demon. If The Conjuring: Last Rites lives up to the expectations of the franchise, it’s sure to be another horror classic.
Additionally, this Friday, the new movie from horror mastermind Stephen King, The Long Walk will be released. King is a big name in the horror genre for his renowned writing, with many of his bestselling books turned into movies as well. Among these include titles such as, It, The Shining and Pet Sematary. The Long Walk is another one of his book releases. The book was published in 1979 and is a number one national bestseller from the author. King’s The Long Walk is a dystopian story about a march that kids are forced to undertake until they are faced with death. Long-time King fans have a lot to look forward to with this latest movie adaption of his best-selling novel. Additionally, the movie will star Cooper Hoffman, Mark Hamill and David Jonsson. Mark Hamill is well known for his work in Star Wars as Luke Skywalker, as well as some of his voice acting work like The Regular Show or The Joker. David Jonsson, while not as well-known by most, is also bringing a big role to this movie, as his performances in other horror movies such as Alien: Romulus have received critical acclaim. In the end, The Long Walk is set up to be another great installation in the horror franchise and Stephen King universe.
Later this year, in the middle of October, the long-anticipated sequel to Director Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone releases. The movie features the return of its star antagonist Ethan Hawke as “The Grabber,” an evil lunatic who abducts children in supernatural ways. The Black Phone Two will serve as a direct sequel in the franchise and features many of the same characters from the first movie. The original Black Phone movie from 2021 received much critical acclaim including Best Horror Film from Saturn Award. Additionally, many of the actors were praised, such as child actors Madeleine McGraw and Mason Thames, who both received “Best Performance by a Younger Actor/Actress” from Saturn Award. In turn, The Black Phone Two has a lot to live up to and many expectations to meet from the franchise’s first movie.
