The 2025 US Open finals – and the roads taken to get to the finals were a mix of thrill, frustration and surprise. In the women’s finals, it was a tough battle between two extraordinary tennis players who were both working towards their goal, and in the men’s finals, a fierce rematch between the two best tennis players in the world for the third time this year.
The number-one-ranked tennis player in the world, Jannik Sinner, competed against number two-ranked Carlos Alcaraz, for the third Grand Slam of the year, a highly anticipated match. Alcaraz, who brings upper-body strength that can serve the ball over 130 mph, went up against Sinner, who brings speed and agility to return it quickly. After winning the French Open but losing to Sinner at Wimbledon, Alcaraz came into the match determined and ready to take the championship title from Sinner. He outmatched Sinner in four sets, winning the 1st (6-2), 3rd (6-1) and 4th (6-4) sets, which secured his victory. After receiving and lifting his trophy, he was ecstatic, believing that this was a really big step in his improvement and career, “This is the best tournament so far that I have ever played. The consistency of my level has been really, really high – it’s something I’ve been working on.”
The women’s final was a less exhilarating battle, but a very important one for both girls competing. Aryna Sabalenka, who came in determined to win the championship for the second year in a row, and Amanda Anisimova, who not only carried the pride of representing America but also searched for her first-ever grand slam title. Anisimova, who is still adjusting from her two-year-long break taken for her mental health, was determined to prove herself after losing in the Wimbledon final in July 2025, where she hadn’t even put any points up on the board. Anisimova put up a hard-fought battle, even pushing the last set into a tiebreaker, but fell short to Sabalenka in a 6-3, 7-6 victory.
The 2025 US Open was one of the most electrifying sports events of the year, every game offering new skills and motivation for the players. The world hopes to see all four finalists again in the next major grand slam, the Australian Open, which is also played on hard courts, where all four seem to excel, and where all will hopefully come back with even more motivation and strength.
