The Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs faced off this past weekend in Super Bowl LIX. The Eagles became two-time champs as they soared over the Chiefs with an impressive score of 40-22.
The Eagles struck first six minutes into the game, as Jalen Hurts scored with the famous “tush push.” After that the Eagles went on to score 34 unanswered points until Patrick Mahomes found Xavier Worthy in the endzone. Philly did slow down offensively but the game was well over by the time the Eagles defense got figured out.
Philly’s defense was a key reason for success. Patrick Mahomes was sacked a total of six times and was under pressure for the majority of the game. Philly’s suffocating pressure also forced a fumble and two interceptions. On one of the interceptions, rookie defensive back Cooper DeJean returned an INT for a pick-six to push the game further out of reach for the Chiefs.
Jalen Hurts had a phenomenal game, he threw for 221 passing yards and completed 17 out of his 22 pass attempts. Hurts also rushed for 72 yards and got a rushing touchdown. This performance from Hurts led him to being named as the Super Bowl MVP. Guys like A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith each had a receiving touchdown. Smith had 69 receiving yards along with his receiving touchdown, and Brown had 43 receiving yards.
Patrick Mahomes on the other hand, had a very shaky game. While Mahomes had more passing attempts, passing yards, and touchdowns, he had a lower completion rate and had more turnovers. Mahomes was hit over 10 times including his six sacks. One of the few bright spots for the Chiefs was rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy. Worthy was targeted eight times and had over 150 receiving yards along with two touchdowns. Worthy’s speed has been on display all season long as he definitely has a good future ahead of him. But, his great effort to help the Chiefs three-peat was nowhere near enough.
Mahomes’s usual top target (Travis Kelce) is turning 36 years-old in October. Kelce has had a phenomenal 11 year career which he has spanned entirely with the Chiefs. Kelce has over 70 receiving touchdowns and over 12.000 yards receiving. The rumors of Kelce’s retirement have flooded the media after this Super Bowl loss. The three-time Super Bowl winner could have possibly played his last game in the NFL.
