Excited to step into the role of assistant principal, Mrs. Miah Vereen brings various experiences as a previous American International Group (AIG) coordinator and middle school teacher at Oberlin Magnet Middle School, as well as as a math teacher at Clayton High School and Havelock High School. Passionate about student success, Mrs. Vereen looks forward to immersing herself in the dynamic culture of Green Hope High School.
Mrs. Vereen’s teaching inspiration came from volunteering in her aunt and grandmother’s classrooms when she was a little girl. Now, with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Middle Grades in Social Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Mrs. Vereen also holds an AIG license and a 9-12 mathematics teaching license. She earned her Master’s degree in School Administration from East Carolina University and is a “North Carolina Teaching Fellow.”
In an interview with the GH Falcon, Mrs. Vereen shares her motive behind coming to this school. “I joined Green Hope because I knew the reputation of the school, and I was super excited to be a part of this awesome community.” Mrs. Vereen further detailed how she looks forward to interacting with the students and getting to know the staff.
Although this will be her first year serving as an assistant principal, she has previously worked in numerous positions similar to this one. “I have worked in a multitude of roles similar to one of an assistant principal,” she mentioned. “I think that everything I’ve done so far has shaped me as an educator and individual. A lot of things I did in the past three years as an instructional coach in middle schools are most of the things I do now. They are very similar – I’ve used a lot of the skills I acquired to help me in everything that I do as an assistant principal.”
As an assistant principal, Mrs. Vereen mentioned some of the tasks she completes. She goes into classrooms to assess teachers’ teaching skills, methods, and interactions with students, dealing with the job’s inevitable discipline aspect. She also attends various daily meetings, finding ways to help run the school daily. Mrs. Vereen further makes time to help out with the math department at Green Hope, as she was head of the Math department at Havelock High School and a middle school math teacher.
Learning from her previous roles, Mrs. Vereen mentioned she would love to implement positivity and optimism into the Green Hope culture. “I strive to make positive relationships with staff and students. Sometimes the bad turns to outweigh the good but whenever you focus on the positive and good relationships, a lot of things can thrive off of that,” she said.
With the long journey ahead, Mrs. Vereen revealed her goals for the future. “One day I would actually love to become a superintendent. I have always had the desire to make things better, to make life easier for teachers, and to make schools more enjoyable for students. My goal here is to make that happen.” Mrs. Vereen aims to improve family and community relationships in the school. She wants Green Hope to be able to do more things involving people from the community and outside of the school to grow. Mrs. Vereen intends to maintain and improve the school’s exceptional reputation, which had caught her eye in the first place.
